In her Heels with Elizabeth Anne Singleton
“You cannot serve others well from an empty cup”
How did you enter into your industry?
It started as a hobby/independent study growing up, and my skills were honed through multiple fashion internships since high school in Alabama and New York, the apparel design school at The University of Alabama, and a career as a designer, seamstress, and production manager in the bridal industry. Just last Fall, I stepped out on faith and resigned from that career to pursue what God wants me to do next. It has been one heck of what I like to call a "faith rollercoaster" ever since, & I wouldn't have it any other way.
Did you always know you wanted to have this career?
I have always loved anything where I can get creative: art, music, food, and fashion. I love math and science, and I almost went the medical route believe it or not! Some people in my family are in the medical field and love it so I thought maybe that’s the way I should go? But I realized my heart wasn't really there and went the creative route instead because that is what I really love to do.
If you could tell yourself one thing when you first started your career, what would it be?
To have more courage.
How do you manage imposter syndrome?
Oh goodness, I think I struggle with this daily! I am blessed to have supportive family and friends who know how to hype a girl up. My number one thing that gets me through though is my faith in God. Being confident in who God made you to be is the MAJOR key.
If you could go back and tell your teenage self advice what would it be?
You cannot serve others well from an empty cup. Don't forget to take care of yourself too: mind, body, and soul.
Where are we likely to find you on the weekends or when you aren't working?
I love to be with my friends and family, but I also tend to be a homebody. Call me an "ambivert!" I love food so naturally I enjoy the Birmingham restaurant/bar scene; it is the best of the best. You can also find me outside taking in the nature around me, or inside cooking, reading, watching something on Netflix or Hulu etc.
Name 3 things you cannot live without.
Music, my Bible, and food. I have mentioned food how many times now? Haha :)
What are you currently listening to? Podcast? Favorite song that motivates you?
A dear friend shared this song with me called "High Up" by Jonathan Traylor...it's so good. I listen to a big mix of music- my Spotify Wrapped was all over the place from SZA to Drake to Hillsong haha. I love me a good podcast too.
How do you get yourself out of a funk when you are having an off day?
Do something to serve someone else- it's uplifting for you both. And (again) make sure you're taking care of yourself! Self-care is not selfish.
What would surprise us about yourself?
Maybe it's not a surprise, but I am the biggest nerd.
What is the best advice you have received?
No matter who you're speaking with, don't be afraid to just ask.
What are some career highlights and biggest career accomplishments?
Well, I'm just getting started on my own in the fashion world, but I'd say the biggest highlight so far was getting to work with my cousin on her wedding dress & reception dress. She & her husband (officially my new cousin!) are such a beautiful couple. They just got married, & I am so happy for them! I cannot wait to see the pictures.
The next thing I'm excited about will be happening 1.11.24. More details to come :)
